Manchester United are reportedly planning major changes to their squad in 2027, with Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot among the players who could be allowed to leave Old Trafford.
According to a report by Football Insider on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Red Devils are looking to strengthen their defence after focusing on their attacking options in 2025 and midfield improvements in 2026. While the club could make additional signings during the January transfer window, some current players may have to leave to create space for new arrivals.
United are also keen to manage their wage expenses as part of their squad rebuilding plans. A recent report by Flashscore, citing journalist Dean Jones, revealed that the club's senior officials have been reviewing players who could bring in reasonable transfer fees, especially those who have failed to establish themselves or are no longer considered important to the team's future.
Jones suggested that Manchester United cannot continue spending heavily on new players and increasing their wage bill without making progress in selling members of their existing squad.
Martinez is among those whose future at the club remains uncertain. The Argentine defender is reportedly entering the final year of his contract, with claims that he is unwilling to accept United's option to extend his deal by another season.
The 28-year-old has also been linked with a possible move to Atletico Madrid. Some reports have even suggested that an agreement in principle could have been reached between the parties, although there is no confirmed evidence to support that claim.
Dalot is another defender whose future at Old Trafford could be in doubt. Football Insider reports that several European clubs are monitoring the Portuguese international as they follow developments surrounding his contract.
The 27-year-old has a contract with Manchester United until 2028 and has recently reached 250 appearances for the club. However, concerns over his performances this season have reportedly increased uncertainty about his long-term position in the squad.
Manchester United are expected to pursue additional defensive signings over the next two transfer windows as they look to improve their options at the back. This could make the sale of some existing defenders necessary to support their recruitment plans.
The possible departures of Martinez and Dalot would leave United with important decisions to make regarding their defensive depth. Nevertheless, the club's reported transfer strategy suggests that the management are prepared to make difficult changes as they work towards building a stronger and more competitive squad.
