Liverpool identify Jacobo Ramon as potential Virgil van Dijk replacement

Liverpool could have the chance to strengthen their defensive options by signing Como centre-back Jacobo Ramon as preparations begin for Virgil van Dijk's possible departure next summer.

According to FootballTransfers on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Liverpool are among several clubs interested in the highly rated 21-year-old Spanish defender, whose recent displays have also attracted attention from Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Van Dijk is approaching the final months of his Liverpool contract, which expires in June 2027. With his long-term future at the club uncertain, the Reds could be forced to identify a suitable successor to their influential captain.

Liverpool have already made arrangements that could help them address the situation. Quansah's departure to Bayer Leverkusen included a buy-back option, while Araujo's loan transfer from Barcelona provides the opportunity to secure his permanent services.

Despite those arrangements, Ramon has become another serious candidate under consideration.

His outstanding performances for Como under the guidance of Cesc Fabregas have earned him recognition at international level, resulting in his first senior call-up to the Spain national team. Meanwhile, his Estimated Transfer Value has climbed to €48.5 million as his reputation continues to grow.

According to SciSports' Career Advice tool, Liverpool would be an excellent club for the youngster to continue his development. The Merseyside outfit received a Club Fit rating of 88, based on factors including playing opportunities, career progression and tactical compatibility.

SciSports also believes Ramon possesses the qualities needed to become one of the leading central defenders in international football, highlighting his considerable long-term potential.

However, Liverpool's chances of completing the transfer could be complicated by Real Madrid's existing agreements with Como.

Los Blancos initially allowed the defender to leave for just €2.5 million but protected their interests by retaining 50 per cent of his rights and negotiating a buy-back clause reportedly valued at €10 million.

Real Madrid could also have a reason to bring him back, as the club assesses its defensive options ahead of Antonio Rudiger's expected contract situation and Eder Militao's continued injury difficulties.

Consequently, a return to the Spanish capital could appeal to Ramon, putting Liverpool in a potentially challenging position as they compete for his signature.

Ramon could represent an exciting long-term defensive investment for Liverpool. However, the Premier League side may need to demonstrate that he would receive more consistent first-team opportunities at Anfield than he would if he returned to the Bernabeu.
