According to reports by The Athletic on Sunday November 1, 2026, Manchester United’s hierarchy has privately agreed to wait until the November international break before making a fresh assessment of Michael Carrick’s position as head coach.
The decision comes after United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, extending their winless run to nine matches in all competitions and increasing the pressure on Carrick.
According to The Athletic’s Manchester United correspondent, Laurie Whitwell, the club had already discussed the manager’s future during crisis talks earlier in the week. However, rather than immediately dismissing him, the hierarchy decided to try to reach the international break before determining what action to take.
Whitwell reported that the possibility of losing against Chelsea had seemingly been considered as part of the club’s thinking. He also pointed out that United still had matches against Roma and Aston Villa before the international break.
This means Carrick has another opportunity to improve the team's results and strengthen his position before the hierarchy reviews his future. However, the latest development suggests that his position is not completely secure.
United's defeat against Chelsea was another disappointing result for the former midfielder. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for the home side in the second half before Cole Palmer converted a penalty to make it 2-0. Lisandro Martinez was also sent off during the encounter.
The result left Manchester United sitting 17th in the Premier League table, with their position close to the relegation zone increasing concerns among supporters.
The club's next fixtures could therefore become important in determining whether Carrick remains in charge beyond the international break. United are scheduled to face Roma in the Champions League before taking on Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Whitwell highlighted a concerning comparison involving United's points-per-game record. According to the figures he shared, the club averaged 1.81 points per game between 2013 and 2024, compared with 1.38 from 2024 onwards.
