According to a report by Football London published on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea and Manchester United are preparing for an important Premier League showdown at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with former footballers Peter Crouch and Steve Sidwell offering their predictions ahead of the highly anticipated encounter.
Both clubs enter the fixture following disappointing periods, although their respective challenges have been different. Chelsea, under manager Xabi Alonso, have suffered successive home defeats against Tottenham and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup. Their situation has become more complicated following injuries to Joao Pedro and Maxence Lacroix, leaving the coaching staff with additional selection problems.
Manchester United are also experiencing difficulties, with manager Michael Carrick facing increasing pressure after disappointing results against Como, Bournemouth and Tottenham. Questions surrounding Bruno Fernandes have further contributed to concerns about the club's current situation.
Chelsea could receive an important boost with Cole Palmer expected to return to the squad, while Fernandes is also anticipated to be available for United. Playing in front of their home supporters could give the Blues an advantage as they attempt to secure a positive result.
Speaking on the That Peter Crouch Podcast, former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch acknowledged Chelsea's injury difficulties but believes they have sufficient quality to overcome their opponents.
Crouch shared his prediction, saying: “You’d expect Chelsea to win. I’m going Chelsea 2-1.”
His assessment suggests that Manchester United's recent struggles could work in Chelsea's favour, although the hosts will still need to improve their performances to justify the prediction.
Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell also expects Alonso's team to emerge victorious. However, he believes the contest could be decided by a smaller margin.
Highlighting the importance of the encounter, Sidwell remarked: “Big game for Chelsea.” He subsequently predicted that the home side would claim a 1-0 victory.
Despite these predictions, Chelsea's recent record against Manchester United provides reasons for concern. Saturday's encounter will be their twentieth meeting since Eden Hazard's decisive strike in the 2018 FA Cup final.
During the previous 19 matches, United have recorded eight victories, compared with Chelsea's three, while eight encounters have ended in draws.
Chelsea's three successes include their 2020 FA Cup semi-final victory, a dramatic 4-3 Premier League triumph under Mauricio Pochettino and a 1-0 win towards the end of the 2024-25 season.
Consequently, Saturday's fixture represents an important opportunity for Alonso to ease the growing pressure surrounding his position. Another disappointing result could increase scrutiny of his management and Chelsea's overall progress.
