According to a report by Football London on Saturday October 31, 2026, Chelsea have received an encouraging development regarding Aaron Anselmino after the young defender was spotted sitting behind the dugout during their Premier League encounter against Manchester United.
The Argentine has been absent from action for several weeks while recovering from a persistent muscle injury that disrupted his progress. Xabi Alonso has remained cautious, insisting that the youngster must regain complete fitness before returning to competitive football.
His appearance around the first-team squad comes at an important moment for Chelsea, who recently suffered another defensive setback following Maxence Lacroix's hamstring injury against Liverpool.
With Lacroix facing a spell on the sidelines, Alonso's available options in central defence have become increasingly limited. Consequently, Anselmino could receive an opportunity once the medical department confirms that he is ready to return.
According to journalist Kieran Gill, Anselmino was spotted sitting behind Chelsea's bench, marking his first appearance around the squad in several weeks. The report also suggested that he could become available for selection once his fitness improves.
Alonso previously addressed the youngster's condition, explaining that his recovery requires patience because of several injury problems.
“He's had a few things, a few injuries, and it still will take a few weeks until he's fully fit,” Alonso explained. “We need to be cautious with him because he has had a few of them, so he's still not there.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea's defensive situation continues to create concerns following Lacroix's absence. Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo remain important options, but the available depth behind them is becoming increasingly concerning.
Wesley Fofana has also struggled to deliver consistent performances, with occasional defensive lapses and costly mistakes raising questions about his reliability.
Another possible solution could involve deploying Josh Acheampong in central defence, despite his natural ability to operate elsewhere across the backline.
With several defensive challenges confronting Alonso, Anselmino's eventual return could provide valuable competition and additional cover as Chelsea attempt to maintain stability at the back.
