According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday November 1, 2026, Arsenal Women rescued a point against Aston Villa after Alessia Russo struck late, cancelling out Chasity Grant’s first-half opener in a competitive encounter that ended with both sides sharing the spoils at home.
Arsenal started brightly and created several opportunities, with Caitlin Foord, Georgia Stanway and Taylor Hinds testing goalkeeper Akane Okuma. However, Villa’s defence remained organised and repeatedly frustrated the hosts throughout the opening period.
Despite Arsenal’s early pressure, Villa took the lead in the 25th minute. Lynn Wilms supplied the assist, allowing Chasity Grant to finish confidently from the right side of the penalty area for Villa.
The visitors’ goal forced Arsenal to chase an equaliser, but Okuma continued producing important saves. Géraldine Reuteler and Stanway both threatened, while Russo also struggled to find the target before halftime once more.
Arsenal made two changes at half-time, introducing Emily Fox and Lisa Baum as they searched for a breakthrough. Their pressure continued after the restart, although Villa defended resolutely against repeated attacking moves constantly.
Further substitutions followed as Arsenal increased their attacking threat. Baum tested Okuma, while Foord and Stanway created opportunities, but the goalkeeper and Villa’s defenders continued keeping the Gunners firmly at bay once again.
Arsenal’s persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute when Russo headed home from close range. Stina Blackstenius, introduced shortly beforehand, delivered an excellent cross that allowed the forward to equalise for Arsenal.
The hosts pushed for a winner during the closing stages, with Russo and Stanway missing late chances. However, Villa held on, securing a valuable draw after their comeback late on at the Emirates.
