‎A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Akeem Adedeji Agbaje, Esq., has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

‎The Flamingos made history as the first African team to win the competition after defeating Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat. Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku secured the landmark victory for Nigeria.

‎In his congratulatory message, Agbaje described the achievement as a triumph of resilience, determination and commitment, noting that the players had demonstrated remarkable character in overcoming challenges throughout the competition.

‎“Coming back from an opening defeat to win five consecutive matches and eventually lift the trophy speaks volumes about the character, determination and fighting spirit of these young ladies. They refused to be defined by an early setback and instead responded with courage, discipline and a strong belief in their ability.”

‎“This is more than a football victory. It is a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent, as the Flamingos have shown that with commitment, proper guidance and opportunity, our young talents can compete and succeed at the highest level.

‎He particularly recalled the team’s victories over defending champions North Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil on their way to the final, describing the results as a reflection of the quality and competitive spirit within the squad.

‎The APC chieftain also commended head coach Akeem Busari, his technical crew and the officials for their dedication and contribution to the team’s success.

‎“I congratulate the players, the coaching crew and everyone who contributed to this historic accomplishment. Their collective effort has given Nigerians a moment of genuine pride and provided an encouraging example for young girls who aspire to make their mark in sports.

‎“I urge the players to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their development. This achievement is a significant milestone, and I wish them even greater accomplishments in their future careers.”
