Tottenham Hotspur secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, scoring twice in the closing stages to claim a significant Premier League win and end an eight-year wait for a victory at the ground.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders inadvertently punched a corner into his own net, handing Tottenham a crucial advantage in a tightly contested London derby.
Chelsea’s hopes of recovering suffered another setback three minutes later when midfielder Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the hosts to finish the match with 10 men.
Tottenham capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Mathys Tel producing a spectacular finish in the 87th minute to double the visitors’ lead.
The forward skipped past defenders before unleashing a long-range strike into the bottom-left corner, leaving the Chelsea goalkeeper beaten.
The late goals settled a contest in which both sides had created opportunities but struggled to find the breakthrough for much of the match.
Chelsea threatened through Palmer, Pedro Neto and Morgan Rogers, but Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský made important saves to keep the hosts at bay. Kinský denied Palmer’s effort in the 14th minute and produced another good stop to thwart Neto just before half-time.
Tottenham also had their chances, with Mohammed Kudus going close in the 20th minute and Omar Marmoush testing Chelsea goalkeeper Penders later in the first half.
The visitors enjoyed spells of possession and continued to press after the interval, although James Maddison’s withdrawal through injury in the 51st minute disrupted their plans. Conor Gallagher came on as his replacement.
Chelsea appeared capable of holding on for a draw until the own goal changed the contest in Tottenham’s favour. Palmer’s dismissal then made the task more difficult, and Tel’s late strike put the result beyond doubt.
Despite a seven-minute period of added time, Chelsea could not find a response, with Tottenham managing the closing stages to secure all three points.
The result handed Tottenham a notable away win over their London rivals, while Chelsea were left to rue their defensive misfortune, missed chances and Palmer’s dismissal.
