Everton moved up to seventh place in the Premier League table after registering a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Monday night, leaving the hosts further down the standings following another disappointing performance.
The visitors secured all three points through Thierno Barry, who found the back of the net in the 49th minute. The forward reacted quickly inside the Newcastle penalty area to convert from close range after Tyrique George's attempt created a scoring opportunity.
The victory lifted Everton to 13 points from nine matches, putting them just one point behind sixth-placed Brentford and two points behind Liverpool, who occupy fifth position with 15 points.
Everton have now registered three wins, four draws and two defeats in their opening nine league fixtures. Their latest triumph was particularly important as it ended a disappointing sequence of two consecutive defeats and handed them their first Premier League victory since September.
Barry also continued his impressive run against Newcastle, having scored against the same opponents during Everton's 3-1 Carabao Cup victory on Thursday. His latest contribution proved decisive as Everton completed another successful visit to Tyneside.
Meanwhile, Newcastle remained on 11 points and dropped to 13th position after suffering their fourth league defeat of the campaign. They have managed three victories and two draws, scoring 12 goals while conceding 15.
At the top of the table, Arsenal maintained their position with 24 points, three ahead of Manchester City. Brighton occupy third place with 19 points, while Chelsea complete the top four with 16 points.
The result gives Everton renewed confidence as they look to maintain their upward movement and challenge for a place among the Premier League's leading clubs.
