Everton moved into seventh place in the Premier League after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Monday night. Thierno Barry scored the decisive goal as the visitors completed Matchweek 9 with three important points.
Newcastle entered the contest hoping to strengthen their position in the race for European qualification. However, they struggled to break down Everton, whose defensive organisation frustrated the home supporters throughout the encounter.
The first half ended without a goal, with both teams keeping their opponents from creating a decisive breakthrough. Everton eventually found the opening in the 49th minute when Barry finished to put the visitors ahead. Newcastle players faced further frustration as VAR reviewed the goal before confirming it.
The hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser but could not find a way past Everton's defence. Their difficult evening worsened in stoppage time when midfielder Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards in quick succession. The dismissal left Newcastle with ten players as they chased a late comeback.
The result lifted Everton to seventh position with 13 points from nine matches. Newcastle remained 13th with 11 points, missing an opportunity to move closer to the European qualification places. The narrow gap between several mid-table teams means the standings could change significantly in the coming fixtures.
Arsenal remain top of the table with 24 points, three ahead of reigning champions Manchester City. At the opposite end, Manchester United sit 17th with seven points, keeping them close to the relegation places. Ipswich Town occupy 14th position with 11 points, underlining the competition among teams in the middle of the standings.
Everton will return to action on Friday, November 6, when they host newly promoted Coventry City. Newcastle, meanwhile, will travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday to face Fulham as they seek a response to their home defeat.
