Manchester United produced an incredible comeback at Old Trafford yesterday to beat AS Roma 3-2 in the Champions League and end their worst winless run since 1988.
Michael Carrick's side came into the game on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 without a win in nine games across all competitions. At half-time against Roma, that run looked set to become ten.
Roma led 2-0 at the break and the home fans were booing. Matias Soule had opened the scoring and Donyell Malen doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Ayden Heaven blocked Soule's shot with his arm.
United needed a miracle, and they got it in the second half.
The comeback started in the 58th minute. Matheus Cunha won a penalty, and Bruno Fernandes stepped up. His first attempt was saved by Roma's third-choice debutant keeper Devis Vasquez, but the referee ordered a retake for encroachment. Fernandes made no mistake the second time, smashing it home to make it 2-1. It was his first goal in nine games.
Cunha then took over. The Brazilian had been involved in every important moment. In the 83rd minute he pounced on a defensive error to drag United level at 2-2, before hammering home the winner just three minutes later in the 86th minute to complete the turnaround from 0-2 to 3-2.
The ending was pure chaos. Cunha was booked in the 87th minute for taking his top off to celebrate, and then sent off in the 91st minute for a second yellow.
Despite finishing with ten men, Manchester United held on for a famous win. The result moves United up to 17th in the league phase standings with two wins and two defeats from four matches, while Roma sit two points behind in 19th. For Carrick, it was a lifeline when he needed it most.
