Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Roma 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, November 3, giving manager Michael Carrick some relief after a difficult period at the club.
United looked set for another disappointing result after falling two goals behind within the opening 18 minutes at Old Trafford.
Roma took the lead through Matias Soule before Donyell Malen converted a penalty to make it 2-0. The early goals increased pressure on Carrick, whose team had struggled to find consistency in recent matches.
The atmosphere at Old Trafford became tense, with frustrated supporters expressing their anger during the first half.
However, Manchester United returned for the second half with renewed determination and began putting Roma under pressure.
Captain Bruno Fernandes gave the home side hope by converting a penalty in the 58th minute. His first attempt had been saved, but the referee ordered a retake after a Roma player encroached into the penalty area.
United continued attacking as Roma struggled to maintain their earlier control of the match.
Matheus Cunha then became the hero of the night, scoring twice in quick succession to complete the comeback and give Manchester United a 3-2 lead.
His goals sparked celebrations among the home supporters, who had watched their team struggle during the opening half.
However, Cunha's evening ended dramatically when he received a second yellow card in stoppage time and was sent off. Manchester United managed to hold on to their advantage until the final whistle.
Elsewhere, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain delivered an impressive performance by beating Villarreal 6-0 in Spain.
PSG dominated the match, with Joao Neves, Desire Doue, Senny Mayulu and Fabian Ruiz among the players who scored. David Boly also found the net as the French side maintained their perfect start to the competition.
The result strengthened PSG's position at the top of the Champions League standings.
Manchester United's victory was particularly important for Carrick, who had faced growing pressure following the team's poor run of results.
The dramatic win could provide the players with renewed confidence as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
