Newcastle United slipped to 13th place in the Premier League standings following their 1-0 defeat to Everton at St James' Park on Monday night, extending their disappointing run in the competition.
Thierno Barry scored the decisive goal in the 49th minute to condemn Newcastle to their fourth defeat in nine league matches this season.
The Magpies remain on 11 points, having recorded three victories, two draws and four defeats.
They have scored 12 goals and conceded 15, leaving them with a negative goal difference of three.
Newcastle had started the round in 13th position but their latest setback leaves them increasingly distant from the European qualification places.
They are now four points behind sixth-placed Brentford, who have collected 14 points.
Their position also leaves them level on points with Hull City, Leeds United and Ipswich Town, although Newcastle sit below the first two and above Ipswich on goal difference.
At the top of the table, Arsenal maintain their lead with 24 points, followed by Manchester City on 21 and Brighton on 19.
Chelsea occupy fourth place with 16 points.
Newcastle's latest defeat comes just days after losing 3-1 to Everton in the Carabao Cup, meaning they have suffered two losses against the same opponents within five days.
Anthony Elanga came close to rescuing a point when his second-half effort struck the post, while substitute Yoane Wissa was denied by Jordan Pickford late in the game.
The hosts also finished with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards within 84 seconds in stoppage time.
Newcastle will need to improve their results in the coming fixtures to avoid losing further ground in the Premier League standings.
