Coventry City were unable to build on Jack Rudoni's second-half equaliser as Tottenham Hotspur secured a 3-1 Premier League victory, leaving the visitors 17th in the standings.
Rudoni scored five minutes after the restart to bring Coventry level after Tottenham had taken the lead through James Maddison in the 14th minute.
The winger made his move down the left flank before recovering possession following a blocked effort and finishing to restore parity.
His goal came after Tottenham had threatened to take a commanding advantage in the first half.
Maddison had opened the scoring with a superb first-time shot into the top corner, while Dominic Solanke later had an effort ruled out for offside in the build-up involving Andy Robertson.
Coventry's response put them back in contention, but they struggled to maintain the momentum after drawing level.
Tottenham regained the lead in the 58th minute through Omar Marmoush, whose powerful finish proved decisive.
The goal was controversial, with Coventry players unhappy over an alleged elbow by the Egyptian on defender Milan van Ewijk before the strike.
Despite the protests, the goal stood, leaving Coventry needing another equaliser to keep their hopes of collecting points alive.
Tottenham defended their advantage before Ben Davies scored a third goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, ending Coventry's chances of recovering.
The result was a setback for Coventry, who remained on six points after seven league matches.
They dropped below Tottenham into 17th place because of their inferior goal difference.
Tottenham's victory lifted them from 20th to 16th, highlighting how the outcome affected the positions of both teams in the early-season standings.
Coventry will need to improve their results in subsequent fixtures to move away from the lower end of the table.
