Real Madrid have secured a place among the UEFA Champions League’s leading teams after beating RB Leipzig 4-1 on Wednesday, taking their points tally to nine from three matches in the league phase.
The victory leaves Madrid fourth in the standings supplied after the latest round of fixtures, level on points with Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Real Betis.
Their goal difference of plus five puts them behind PSG, Aston Villa and Liverpool, while PSG lead the table on goal difference.
Madrid have won all three of their opening matches, giving them an early advantage in the race to finish among the eight teams that qualify directly for the round of 16.
However, with five league-phase fixtures remaining, their current position is not yet secure.
The Spanish side have scored ten goals and conceded five so far.
Their campaign began with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan, followed by a 4-3 win away to Roma before Wednesday’s meeting with Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Against Leipzig, Madrid found their breakthrough shortly before half-time when Bernardo Silva scored in the 44th minute.
Arda Güler doubled the lead seven minutes after the restart, putting the hosts in a stronger position.
Kylian Mbappé added a third in the 83rd minute, but Leipzig responded almost immediately through Tidiam Gomis.
Yan Diomande then scored Madrid’s fourth in the 87th minute to settle the contest at 4-1.
Madrid will next travel to Greece to face AEK Athens on November 4.
