Barcelona youth star could emerge as right back option after Xavi Espart injury

According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Barcelona could consider academy midfielder Brian Farinas as an emergency right-back following Xavi Espart’s injury.

Manager Hansi Flick is exploring alternative options to address the club’s defensive concerns, with Espart expected to be sidelined for seven weeks.

Reports suggest Farinas is among the players being considered for the role after impressing Flick during Barcelona’s pre-season preparations.

The 18-year-old primarily plays in midfield but has already been tested at right-back by the German manager.

Barcelona are currently facing uncertainty in the position, with Eric Garcia continuing his recovery from injury while Jules Kounde works towards returning to action.

Farinas could therefore offer Flick another option as he looks to manage the situation without making a permanent adjustment to the team’s defensive structure.

The youngster joined Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy in 2018 and has continued to progress through the club’s youth system. His performances for Barça Atletic last season further enhanced his reputation.

During pre-season, Flick assessed Farinas’ ability to operate in a different position, with one of his most notable appearances coming against Birmingham City on July 31.

Farinas replaced Espart at right-back and played for 28 minutes, reportedly impressing with his positioning and adaptability.

He also featured in midfield during other pre-season fixtures, including matches against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, as well as the Joan Gamper Trophy encounter against Al-Ahli.

The academy midfielder accumulated 198 minutes across five friendly matches.

Flick had previously praised Farinas before Barcelona’s La Liga meeting with Rayo Vallecano, describing him as an excellent and highly talented player.

However, the youngster is yet to make his competitive first-team debut for the Catalan club.

Competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield has also made it difficult for Farinas to establish himself in his preferred position.

The current injury situation could now provide him with another opportunity to break into the first team, although Flick has not confirmed whether he will deploy the youngster at right-back in a competitive match.

With Espart unavailable and Garcia and Kounde dealing with their respective fitness concerns, Farinas could emerge as an unexpected solution if Barcelona need additional cover in the position.
