According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, citing information from The Athletic, Chelsea insiders reportedly believe the club secured an excellent financial deal by selling Andrey Santos to Manchester United for £50 million, with some viewing the transfer fee as significantly higher than the Brazilian midfielder’s current market value.
Manchester United paid an initial £48 million for the 22 year old, with a further £2 million included in performance related add ons. Chelsea also negotiated a 10 per cent sell on clause, ensuring they could receive additional money if United eventually decide to sell the midfielder.
Santos arrived at Old Trafford after showing considerable promise during his spell at Stamford Bridge. He recorded three goals and five assists in 47 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating his potential despite facing competition for a regular place in Chelsea's midfield.
However, the Blues were willing to sanction his departure when United met their financial demands. Reports suggest that some people within Chelsea believe the Manchester club paid approximately £25 million more than Santos was worth at the time of the transfer.
The midfielder's performances at Old Trafford have so far raised questions about whether United made the right investment. Since completing his move, Santos has managed only four Premier League starts and has struggled to establish himself as a regular member of Michael Carrick's starting XI.
The Athletic's assessment also reportedly questioned United's recruitment strategy, particularly whether the Brazilian possessed the qualities needed to solve the club's ongoing midfield problems.
From Chelsea's perspective, the transfer could prove to be a smart piece of business. The club received a substantial fee for a player who was not guaranteed a regular starting position while retaining the possibility of further financial rewards through the sell on agreement.
Nevertheless, Santos still has time to justify United's investment. At 22, he has several years to improve, adapt to English football and establish himself as an important figure at Old Trafford.
His future development could also benefit Chelsea financially, as an increase in his value may create an opportunity for the Blues to receive another significant payment.
