Real Madrid Near Deal for Manchester United Star After He Decides to Leave Over Lack of Game Time

Real Madrid are reportedly close to signing Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel after the 16-year-old submitted a transfer request over concerns about his opportunities at Old Trafford, according to GOAL on November 4, 2026.

The Spanish club are said to have moved ahead of several European rivals in the race for the teenager. Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were among the sides linked with him, while Chelsea explored the possibility of bringing him to England. However, a transfer to another Premier League club would have involved additional regulatory complications.

Gabriel turned 16 in October and has already begun training in Madrid as he waits for FIFA to authorise his departure from United. Although the proposed move appears to be progressing, the necessary approval has not yet been granted, meaning the transfer is not formally complete.

His decision to leave follows reported tensions with United over his development pathway and access to first-team opportunities. Gabriel is understood to have stopped attending the club's Carrington training ground after leaving before the academy side's Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton on September 16.

The disagreement reportedly intensified after his representatives sought assurances about his involvement in upcoming matches. They are said to have requested a guarantee of at least 20 minutes of playing time across fixtures against Sabah FK, Brighton and Bournemouth before entering discussions over a scholarship agreement.

United were unable to reach an understanding with the player's camp. Efforts by club officials to restore the relationship reportedly failed to change the family's position, with Gabriel's relatives favouring a move overseas as the preferred next step in his development.

His Irish passport is believed to have helped make a transfer to Spain possible under the applicable regulations. Nevertheless, FIFA clearance remains necessary, and the parties must also establish the compensation payable to Manchester United as part of the arrangement.

Earlier reporting by talkSPORT suggested United could receive a compensation payment of approximately £300,000. That figure has not been confirmed as the final amount, and the financial terms remain subject to formal agreement.

Former United captain Wayne Rooney has said Gabriel's potential departure was not unexpected. Rooney has followed the youngster's progress through the academy because Gabriel played in the same team as his son, Kai.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Rooney explained that he had watched the teenager develop and believed the possibility of him leaving had been apparent for some time. He also indicated that there had been interest in allowing Gabriel to pursue opportunities abroad, particularly in Spain. Rooney noted that the player was still 15 when the situation first became a talking point.

Gabriel is expected to remain in Madrid and continue training while the outstanding authorisation is considered. Until FIFA approval and the other formal arrangements are completed, his future remains unresolved.

For United, losing a highly regarded academy prospect would be a setback, especially given the attention surrounding his development. The club must now manage the situation carefully while continuing its efforts to retain other promising young players. Gabriel's case also highlights the challenges clubs can face when balancing the expectations of talented teenagers and their families with established development plans.
