Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has criticised Amad’s recent social media activity, arguing that the winger should demonstrate his commitment through performances rather than public statements. The Manchester Evening News reported on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that Rooney remains dissatisfied with the player’s response to the club’s difficult spell, despite recognising his contribution this season.
United have endured a disappointing campaign, leaving head coach Michael Carrick under growing pressure. The club had been expected to compete for a place in the Premier League’s top four, but inconsistent performances have prevented them from meeting those expectations. Their struggles have also increased frustration among supporters who want to see a meaningful improvement.
Rooney believes Amad’s latest online comments following the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea did little to address the situation. The Ivorian winger posted an optimistic message suggesting that United would overcome their current difficulties, but the former captain felt that such reassurance was unnecessary without stronger performances on the pitch.
Amad has generally maintained a positive reputation at Old Trafford. He is appreciated by supporters for his professionalism and work ethic, and has largely avoided controversy during his time at the club. Nevertheless, he has occasionally attracted attention through indirect messages on social media.
Rooney was particularly unhappy with the latest post because he believes attacking players must take responsibility for influencing matches. Speaking on The Overlap, he acknowledged Amad’s dedication but insisted that effort alone is insufficient for someone operating in an attacking position.
“I must say, Amad puts in a lot of effort. Indeed, he does. The man puts in a lot of hours. Still, scoring is a must if you were to play that position,” Rooney said, stressing that the winger must contribute through goals and assists.
The former United striker argued that Amad should make better use of the promising attacking situations he finds himself in. Rather than relying on encouraging messages, Rooney wants to see him turn those opportunities into decisive contributions that can change the outcome of matches.
He also expressed frustration with the repeated online messages and assurances surrounding the club’s struggles. In his view, supporters have heard enough promises about improvement and now expect the players to produce convincing performances.
“The constant stream of these posts and whatever has worn me down. Get down to business on the field. Everyone wants to see that. Put your best foot forward on the field!” he added.
Rooney’s criticism reflects a wider frustration among United followers, many of whom have become tired of hearing optimistic statements without seeing consistent progress. The club’s recent results have made it increasingly difficult for supporters to remain confident that a turnaround is approaching.
Although Amad has been among United’s more effective performers this season, Rooney believes he must continue developing his end product and accept the responsibility that comes with his position. The winger’s next performances will therefore matter more than any message shared online.
For Carrick, the priority remains improving results and restoring confidence throughout the squad. United need players to translate their commitment into tangible contributions, particularly during a period when pressure is increasing. Rooney’s message is that determination must be visible in performances, goals and victories, not simply expressed through social media posts.
