Barcelona are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez as they begin exploring potential defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2027 summer transfer window.
According to Barca Blaugranes on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the Spanish club are monitoring the Argentina international’s contractual situation as they assess opportunities to strengthen their backline. Spanish outlet El Desmarque reports that Martinez has emerged as a possible target because of his experience and qualities as a left-footed centre-back.
The 28-year-old’s current contract at Old Trafford is due to expire next summer, potentially creating an opportunity for Barcelona to secure his services without paying a transfer fee. However, that possibility depends on whether Manchester United exercise their option to extend his agreement for another year.
Reports suggest Barcelona could submit a proposal before the end of 2026. If Martinez’s contractual situation remains unchanged, he could be eligible to negotiate with clubs outside England from January, potentially bringing his future into sharper focus during the second half of the season.
Barcelona are understood to value the defender’s experience at the highest level, as well as his ability to operate on the left side of central defence. His arrival could provide additional depth and tactical flexibility for the 2027–28 campaign, particularly as the Catalan side consider their long-term defensive options.
Martinez joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2022 and has since established himself as an important member of the club’s defensive unit. His aggressive approach, technical ability and composure in possession have made him a useful option at the back when available.
Nevertheless, uncertainty surrounding United’s performances and the defender’s long-term future has fuelled speculation about a possible departure. Martinez has also reportedly attracted attention following criticism directed at the club’s hierarchy after Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. However, those reported comments do not necessarily indicate that he intends to leave Old Trafford.
United retain the ability to influence the situation by activating the extension clause in his contract. Doing so could prevent Barcelona from pursuing a straightforward free-transfer arrangement next summer and force the Spanish club to consider alternative options.
There is also no confirmation that Martinez would welcome a move away from Manchester United. His personal preferences, the club’s contractual decision and Barcelona’s willingness to formalise their reported interest will all be important factors in determining whether a deal becomes realistic.
For now, Barcelona’s interest remains at the speculation stage, with no confirmed offer or agreement between the parties. Martinez’s contract negotiations are likely to attract further attention as the January transfer window approaches and both clubs assess their options for the future.
