Leicester City were placed under a transfer embargo during the summer transfer window, a document on the EFL’s website has confirmed.

A report from BBC Sport revealed that the Foxes were briefly restricted from signing players over a five-week period, relating to the EFL’s Salary Cost Management Protocol.

Although they were not allowed to do business until funds were raised, Russell Martin was still able to sign 16 players after they were able to sell high value players like Jeremy Monga, Abdul Fatawu, Harry Winks and more.

GRV Media approached Leicester City and the EFL for comment. Both declined to comment on the situation, however, on the EFL’s website, publication of a decision between the Club Financial Review Panel (CFRU) and Leicester is available to view online.

Here, the document contains details of when the embargo was revealed, with the Foxes restricted from signing any new players from the 26 June 2026, with that lasting for just over five weeks.

Over half of the Foxes’ new recruits joined after the start of the season, including faces like John Lundstram, Emil Riis and Warren O’Hora.

While the ruling may not have affected Leicester’s preparations for the League One season too much, there was never any announcement at the time, and the revelation comes only a matter of weeks after under-fire Chief Football Officer Jon Rudkin said the club would become more transparent after fans hit out at the hierarchy over the lack of communication and accountability.

He told BBC Radio Leicester’s When You’re Smiling podcast: “The fans care about this club and it is natural for me to receive criticism. It is important that we listen, respond to that criticism and act on it.”
