Manchester United rekindle interest in €95m star

Manchester United have reportedly renewed their interest in Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite as the club prepares to strengthen its defence during the 2027 summer transfer window.

According to FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the Red Devils are continuing to assess the England international, whose performances for Everton have attracted attention from several leading clubs. The 23-year-old is viewed as a potential addition as United consider changes to their defensive options.

Reports from TEAMtalk suggest Everton could demand approximately €95 million (£80 million) before agreeing to sell Branthwaite next summer. The Daily Mail has also indicated that the defender remains under consideration at Old Trafford, highlighting the club's continued interest in securing defensive reinforcements.

Branthwaite's recent involvement with England has further raised his profile. The defender made two appearances for the national team under manager Thomas Tuchel during the international break, providing another opportunity to demonstrate his ability at the highest level.

United's reported interest comes amid uncertainty surrounding several players in their current defensive setup. Lisandro Martinez could face an unclear future at the club following reports of disagreements with the hierarchy, potentially creating an opening for a new centre-back.

The Manchester outfit may exercise the 12-month extension clause in Martinez's contract to safeguard his market value. Such a move would reduce the risk of losing the Argentine without a transfer fee if his long-term future at Old Trafford remains unresolved.

Questions also surround Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, whose existing contracts are scheduled to expire in July 2027. Their contractual situations could leave United needing additional defensive options, particularly if the club decides against offering new deals or pursuing further extensions.

Having invested significantly in attacking and midfield reinforcements, United are reportedly preparing to turn their attention towards the back line. Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo joined in 2025, followed by further midfield additions during the subsequent summer window.

Left-back is another position believed to be on the club's recruitment agenda after United failed to secure Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall. Addressing both areas could become important as the club evaluates its squad ahead of the next campaign.

Branthwaite's Premier League experience and ability to operate in central defence make him a potentially attractive candidate. However, Everton's reported asking price could complicate negotiations, particularly if United pursue several defensive targets during the same transfer window.

The club may also explore signing another striker next summer, depending on Joshua Zirkzee's situation. The forward remained at Old Trafford despite speculation over a possible departure during the previous transfer window, and United's plans could depend on whether they can secure a suitable buyer.
