According to a report by FootballTransfers on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes the club are finally beginning to see the best of Romeo Lavia after the midfielder overcame a difficult period of injuries that disrupted his progress at Stamford Bridge.
Lavia joined Chelsea from Southampton for €62 million £51 million in July 2023 but has struggled to maintain consistent fitness since completing the move. However, the Belgian midfielder has made encouraging progress this season, completing 90 minutes against both Liverpool and Manchester United.
Alonso has been particularly impressed with Lavia's improved fitness, confidence and ability to cope with an increased workload.
“Rom is feeling better, stronger and more confident,” he said. “He went from playing the whole game at Anfield to doing it again less than 72 hours later with the same energy. Sometimes the head is more important than the legs, and his head is in a good place.”
The 22 year old delivered an impressive performance during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United, recording 23 defensive contributions, more than any other player on the pitch.
He also provided an assist for Morgan Rogers, registering his second career assist in a Chelsea shirt.
Alonso was equally satisfied with Lavia's overall contribution, highlighting his composure, movement and ability to connect Chelsea's defensive and attacking departments.
“From a midfielder’s point of view, it was a very complete display,” the manager explained. “He made good decisions, switched play well and competed throughout. I’ve seen him in top form over the past few weeks, and he deserves recognition.”
Lavia will now hope to maintain his impressive performances when Chelsea travel to face Sunderland on Sunday.
The Blues have won three of their last four Premier League matches and currently occupy fourth position in the table.
Sunderland, meanwhile, are struggling near the bottom after recording just one victory in their opening nine league matches.
Chelsea will be hoping Lavia can continue his progress and establish himself as an important figure in Alonso's midfield plans.
