CAF Champions League: Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns suffer shock exit

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been eliminated from the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after Angola’s Wiliete SC pulled off a major upset, advancing to the group stage on the away-goals rule following a 1-1 aggregate draw.

The South African giants were held to a 1-1 draw by Wiliete in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday, October 23, after the two teams played out a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola. Blueprint reports

Sundowns appeared to be on course to secure qualification when Tashreeq Matthews put them ahead in the 11th minute. However, Angola international Cristóvão Paciência, popularly known as Mabululu, equalised four minutes into the second half to put Wiliete in control of the tie under the away-goals rule.

Despite pushing for a second goal, Sundowns were unable to break down the visitors’ defence, bringing their continental title defence to a premature end.

The result is one of the biggest upsets of this season’s competition, with Wiliete reaching the Champions League group stage for the first time in the club’s history.

Matthews gives Sundowns early hope

Playing before their home supporters, Sundowns began the return leg knowing that a victory would secure their passage into the group stage after the first encounter ended goalless.

The South African side made a positive start and took the lead in the 11th minute through Matthews, whose effort found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage on the night.

The early goal appeared to put the defending champions in a strong position, as they sought to take control of the tie and avoid the danger of an early elimination.

Sundowns continued to look for opportunities to extend their lead, with their attacking players attempting to put Wiliete under sustained pressure.

However, the Angolan side remained organised and continued to search for opportunities to threaten the hosts. Their persistence eventually paid off shortly after the interval, when a defensive error gave them the opening they needed.

Mabululu’s equaliser changes the tie

Wiliete delivered the decisive blow in the 49th minute when Mabululu capitalised on a defensive mistake to beat Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The goal levelled the score at 1-1 on the night and, more importantly, gave Wiliete the advantage on aggregate through the away-goals rule.

With the aggregate score now level, Sundowns needed another goal to regain control of the tie. The hosts increased their attacking efforts, but Wiliete defended resolutely to preserve their advantage.

The visitors demonstrated discipline during the closing stages, limiting Sundowns’ opportunities and refusing to surrender the lead they had gained through Mabululu’s strike.

As the minutes passed without another goal, the prospect of a historic elimination became increasingly real for the defending champions.

The final whistle confirmed Wiliete’s progression, leaving Sundowns to reflect on missed opportunities and a costly defensive lapse.

End of Sundowns’ impressive group-stage run

The elimination marks a significant departure from Sundowns’ recent record in the competition.

According to Reuters, the South African club had reached the group stage in each of the previous 11 editions of the CAF Champions League, having consistently remained among the continent’s leading sides.

Their latest campaign, however, ended in the second preliminary round, denying them the opportunity to defend the title they won in the previous season.

Sundowns entered the tie as favourites, given their continental pedigree and experience at this level. Wiliete, by contrast, had the opportunity to make history by reaching the group stage for the first time.

The Angolan club had already demonstrated its potential in the preliminary rounds and continued that progress by holding Sundowns to a goalless draw at home before securing the result required in Pretoria.

For Sundowns, the failure to score in the first leg proved costly. Although Matthews’ early goal in the return fixture gave them hope, Mabululu’s equaliser meant the hosts had to find another breakthrough to prevent elimination.

Wiliete celebrate historic qualification

For Wiliete, the result represents a landmark achievement in the club’s development.

Founded in 2018, the Angolan side has now secured a place among the 16 teams expected to contest the Champions League group stage, earning the opportunity to compete against some of Africa’s most established clubs.

Their success was built on defensive organisation, patience and the ability to take advantage of a crucial opening against a more experienced opponent.

Wiliete’s players also showed composure after Sundowns took the lead, avoiding panic and maintaining their approach until Mabululu found the equaliser.

The goal transformed the contest and gave the visitors a result they were able to protect until the end.

Their qualification also provides a significant opportunity for the club to gain continental experience and increase its profile beyond Angola.

Orlando Pirates advance as Sundowns bow out

Sundowns’ elimination also leaves South Africa’s Orlando Pirates as the country’s remaining representatives in the Champions League group stage.

Pirates secured qualification in convincing fashion after defeating Namibia’s African Stars 4-0 in the second leg to complete a 5-0 aggregate victory.

Thapelo Mokobodi opened the scoring in the 11th minute, while Evidence Makgopa doubled the advantage shortly before half-time. Mpho Padime added a third after the restart before Makgopa completed his brace in the 77th minute.

The contrasting fortunes of the two South African clubs highlighted the unpredictable nature of the preliminary rounds, with Pirates advancing comfortably while the defending champions suffered an unexpected exit.

Sundowns must regroup after continental disappointment

The defeat will be a major disappointment for Sundowns, whose ambition was to retain the African title and continue their strong record in the competition.

Attention will now turn to their domestic commitments and the task of recovering from the setback. The elimination is also likely to increase scrutiny of the team’s performance and the management of its continental campaign.

For Wiliete, meanwhile, the focus shifts to preparing for the group stage, where they will face a new level of competition against some of Africa’s strongest clubs.

The Angolan side’s achievement is a reminder that continental pedigree alone cannot guarantee progression. Over two legs, defensive concentration, clinical finishing and the ability to capitalise on decisive moments can determine the outcome.

Sundowns will now watch the group-stage draw from outside the competition, while Wiliete prepare to make their first appearance at that stage.

In a tie that looked finely balanced after the first leg, Mabululu’s second-half goal proved decisive, turning an expected Sundowns qualification into one of the most surprising results of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
