Who is Joe Fagnano, the Ravens' top quarterback vs. the Bills?

Disaster struck for the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8. Lamar Jackson's triumphant return to the lineup lasted a single play before a thumb injury knocked him out of the game. Tyler Huntley took over, but left the game early in the second quarter due to a foot injury. That left the offense in the hands of an undrafted rookie making his NFL debut.

Fortunately, Joe Fagnano has plenty of college experience on which to fall back.

The former Connecticut star played his way onto the Ravens' roster by emerging as an efficient option with plenty of game experience and some modest upside. Let's take a look at what he can do for a Baltimore team that's struggled in stretches of Jesse Minter's first season as head coach.

What does Joe Fagnano bring to the Ravens' offense?

Fagnano started his college career as a walk-on at the University of Maine. He immediately established himself as an asset for the Black Bears, earning a scholarship and backup quarterback duties as a true freshman. Injury thrust him into the starting lineup, where he'd earn Coastal Athletic Association Player of the Week honors twice while leading Maine to a 6-6 season.

2020 saw his season cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. He played four games in 2021 and made 11 starts for a 2-9 team in 2022 before entering the transfer portal, where Jim Mora Jr. and the Connecticut Huskies awaited. He was named the team's starter in his debut season, but played only two games due to injury. He returned in 2024 and led the Huskies to a 9-4 record -- the program's best since 2007.

One year later, he emerged as one of the most efficient quarterbacks in college football. He threw 28 touchdown passes against a single interception and led UConn to a 9-3 regular season record before sitting out a deflating loss to Army in the Fenway Bowl.

He was an undrafted free agent who still managed to make the Ravens' 53-man roster after a solid preseason. He completed nearly 75 percent of his passes and threw for three touchdowns and a single interception in his exhibition NFL debut.

With seven years of college play under his belt, Fagnano brings plenty of experience to the Baltimore huddle even without appearing in a regular season game. At 6-foot-3 and 226 pounds, he has the build of an NFL pocket passer and some utility as a runner -- though nothing approaching Jackson levels. He's solid on his first reads and can progress quickly, though his arm strength and accuracy lag behind what you'd expect from a player with a 28:1 TD:INT ratio last fall.

Even so, he's an intriguing talent with plenty to prove. The Buffalo Bills, with a bottom-four passing defense, should allow him some runway to get his NFL career off the ground. Though, admittedly, things could have started better for him.
