Alcester Town manager Aaron Blackwood reflected on a ‘very frustrating’ afternoon as the Romans were held to a goalless draw by Clanfield 85.
The Romans were looking to continue their positive Hellenic League Division One campaign, but found themselves unable to break down a determined visiting side, with the Romans finishing the match with 10 men.
Captain Jake Wicketts came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, while Tom Walker produced some important interventions at the other end to keep the visitors at bay.
However, the game took another turn in the closing stages when Henry Gibson was shown a second yellow card, leaving Alcester to play the final 15 minutes with ten men.
Despite the setback, the Romans remained organised and determined to see out the game, eventually settling for a point as the final whistle confirmed a goalless draw.
“It was a very, very frustrating afternoon,” said Blackwood. “I think we could still be playing now and we wouldn't have scored.”
On the red card, Blackwood added: “It was another harsh red card, with the referee ultimately overruling his assistant, who was much closer to the incident. It just compounded an already frustrating afternoon.”
The Romans started the afternoon looking to make home advantage count against a Clanfield side sitting ninth in the Hellenic League Division One table.
Alcester looked to get forward and create opportunities, with captain Jake Wicketts coming closest to giving the hosts the lead.
Wicketts produced a clever piece of skill, chesting the ball down before turning sharply and getting an effort away towards goal. However, the Clanfield goalkeeper reacted well to make the save and keep the scores level.
At the other end, Tom Walker was required to stay alert when a cross caused problems inside the Alcester penalty area. Having initially fumbled the delivery, the goalkeeper reacted quickly to get down and gather the loose ball before Clanfield could capitalise.
Both sides continued to compete for control of the game, but clear opportunities were limited as the defences remained organised.
Neither team could find a breakthrough before the interval, with the scores remaining goalless at half-time.
Alcester returned for the second half knowing that a goal could prove decisive in what remained a closely contested encounter.
The Romans made their first change just before the hour mark, with Zak James replacing Dale Edwards in the 56th minute as Alcester looked to freshen things up.
Six minutes later, Oscar Abercrombie was introduced in place of Cameron Crook as the hosts continued to search for a way through the Clanfield defence.
At the other end, Walker remained important for The Romans, producing an excellent save to keep out a long-range effort from the visitors and ensure the scores remained level.
However, the closing stages took another turn when Henry Gibson was shown a second yellow card following a questionable refereeing decision. The dismissal left the Romans facing the final 15 minutes with 10 men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Alcester remained determined and continued to battle for a positive result. The players showed good organisation and commitment to see out the closing stages without conceding.
With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the referee's final whistle confirmed that the points would be shared at Stratford Road.
After finishing the game a man down, the Romans had to settle for a point, but they remain top of Hellenic League Division One with 36 points from 17 matches.
