Clevedon beat Larkhall 2-0 to reach cup quarter-finals

Clevedon were always in control of the tie against a lacklustre Larkhall side who barely registered a shot on target thanks to a commanding display by a new central defensive partnership of James Wakefield and Chris Lines and two opportunist finishes from Lucas Vowles.

An explosive start saw Clevedon almost take the lead straight from the kick-off when the ball was played out to Jacob Sloggett on the left to get into the box, and Larkhall keeper Liam Armstrong could only tip Sloggett’s fierce cross shot over for a corner.

Lloyd James planted the corner into the box, and when the ball was only partially cleared, another Sloggett shot was blocked and the ball cleared.

Larkhall’s first foray upfield saw Ben Cleary sent clear and James Dunn was quickly out to save.

Seventeen minutes in, Clevedon capitalised on their good start and grabbed the lead.

Tom Chaplin played the ball out to Ethan Streeter on the left, who went past former Seasider Jack Goodall and fired over a perfect cross for Vowles to smash the ball past Armstrong to make it 1-0.

Glen Hayer then had to clear from former Clevedon United’s Josh Morgan, but Clevedon were close with efforts from Ben Griifith, Vowles and Chaplin, who hit his shot into the ground and wide.

Larkhall suffered a double blow on the half hour and again Town were able to take advantage to double the lead.

First Jeff Barimah hobbled off to be replaced by former Clevedon favourite Seb Scott, who made a nightmare start when, with his first touch, he attempted to find keeper Armstrong with a long back pass but only succeeded in setting up Vowles, who quickly spotted the opportunity and flicked the ball past the keeper into the net to make it 2-0.

Clevedon’s impressive work rate saw them constantly able to win the ball back and create chances and keep Armstrong on his toes, and the keeper was quickly off his line to deny Vowles twice, the first from a good through ball from Sloggett.

Just before half-time Chaplin robbed Harry Martinez to send Sloggett racing away to cross, but a delicate flick by Vowles went just over, and Lines had to clear from Martinez after a patient build-up by the visitors, so at half-time it remained 2-0 to the Seasiders.

After another good start to the second half, Clevedon started making changes and introduced new signing from Bristol Manor Farm, Lucas Tomlinson, for Chaplin, but they continued to keep the Larkhall defence busy.

Two Clevedon free kicks came to nothing after Sloggett was pulled down when Tomlinson sent him through, and then when Tomlinson was tripped himself, Lines hit the free kick just over the bar.

The visitors were never able to exert enough pressure to trouble Clevedon, and former Seasider Alex Camm planted a near-post header wide, then blazed an attempted shot high and well wide.

With the result never in doubt, Clevedon saw out the game to seal a deserved 2-0 win and on Saturday, November 7, face Liskeard Athletic at the Hand.
