Newmarket Town stretched their impressive unbeaten run in all competitions to 14 matches in remarkable fashion this afternoon.
With an hour gone in their home Isthmian League North Division contest against Tilbury, the Jockeys found themselves 3-0 down and facing up to the prospect of a first defeat since September 8, when they were beaten by Canvey Island in the FA Cup.
However, a penalty from Elliott Reeves in the 68th minute got Newmarket back into the contest before midfielder Lennon King reduced the arrears to just one goal five minutes later.
And while that appeared to be the end of the comeback for Michael Shinn’s men, Reeves popped up with his second goal of the game in stoppage time to salvage an unlikely share of the spoils.
It has certainly been a positive start to life in a Newmarket shirt for Reeves, with today’s double taking his tally to nine goals in 10 appearances.
The draw has kept third-placed Newmarket a point behind table-topping Gorleston, who have played a game more.
Elsewhere in the division, AFC Sudbury halted their four-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory on the road at Grays Athletic.
Two quickfire first-half goals – scored by Kaidon Tower-King and Ed Barker – got the job done for Phil Weavers’ charges, who will play host to Newmarket next weekend.
Fifteenth-placed Sudbury will go into that encounter at the Elite Travel Stadium having opened up a six-point gap to the bottom four.
Meanwhile, up a level in the Southern League Premier Central Division, the matches involving Bury Town and Needham Market ended in score draws.
Second-placed Bury failed to fully capitalise on a defeat for league-leading Real Bedford as they played out a 2-2 draw at home with Banbury United.
Gus Sanches’ 38th-minute goal sent the visitors into the break 1-0 up at the Getaway Cars Stadium, but within nine minutes of the restart, Bury had turned the scoreline around in their favour.
Captain Ollie Canfer equalised before Alfie Wellens marked his debut for the Blues with a goal. The midfielder’s arrival on loan from EFL League One club Leyton Orient had only been confirmed by Bury earlier today.
Wellens, who is the son of Orient boss Richie, has initially joined Cole Skuse’s team on a one-month deal.
However, it did not prove to be a match-winning impact from the youngster as Banbury’s Tolu Ikuyinminu levelled up the contest 20 minutes from time.
A victory would have moved Bury top, but as it is, they are second on goal difference from Real Bedford following their 4-1 loss at Worcester City.
As for Needham, they dropped out of the play-off positions following a 3-3 draw at Redditch United.
The Marketmen appeared to be cruising towards a victory when goals from Luke Ingram (2) and Liam Pearce had them 3-0 in the ascendancy after 57 minutes.
However, two goals within the space of a minute from Alezandro da Silva (69’) and William Fielding (70’) got Redditch back into the contest, with the equaliser eventually arriving from Dan Sweeney in the sixth minute of time added on.
Leiston, meanwhile, were on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline at home against Alvechurch.
Miracle Okafor scored twice for the visitors inside the opening 20 minutes, only for Harvey Sayer to give Leiston some hope when he pulled a goal back before the break.
But the away side went on to make the outcome safe just after the hour mark courtesy of George Forsyth.
Leiston, who are 15th and just two points above the relegation zone, have won only one of their last six league matches.
