MBOKAZI SUSPENDED! BAFANA DEFENDER TO MISS CHICAGO FIRE’S NEXT MATCH AFTER YELLOW-CARD BAN
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been handed a one-match suspension that will see him miss Chicago Fire’s upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) fixture against Orlando City.
The suspension comes after the South African international received his fifth yellow card of the season during Chicago Fire’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Atlanta United on Saturday, 24 October 2026.
According to reports, the booking triggered an automatic one-match ban, dealing a temporary setback to the young defender as his American club continues its push towards the end of the regular season. <Cite refs={["turn608907search0","turn608907search1"]}/>
Mbokazi’s absence will be felt by Chicago Fire, particularly because the defender has become an important part of the team’s defensive structure since returning from a thigh injury.
Mbokazi misses crucial Chicago Fire fixture
The 20-year-old was booked in the 81st minute against Atlanta United after delivering another determined defensive performance.
Despite the yellow card, Chicago Fire managed to secure an important away victory, with three different players finding the net to help the team claim all three points.
The result strengthened Chicago’s position in the Eastern Conference standings as the club approaches the final stages of the MLS campaign.
However, head coach Gregg Berhalter will now have to make adjustments to his defensive lineup for the meeting with Orlando City on Wednesday, 28 October.
Jack Elliott is among the players expected to be considered as a replacement at centre-back, while Chicago must also manage the absence of midfielder Dje D’Avilla, who is suspended because of yellow-card accumulation. <Cite refs={["turn608907search1","turn608907search3"]}/>
A setback after an encouraging return
Mbokazi’s suspension arrives at a time when he has been rebuilding his momentum following an injury setback earlier in the season.
After returning to action, the defender started six consecutive MLS matches and produced encouraging defensive numbers, including tackles, clearances and blocks.
His performances have underlined why Chicago Fire value his contribution, particularly his ability to read danger, win challenges and help protect the team’s goal.
The suspension is therefore an interruption rather than an indication of a decline in his form.
Nevertheless, accumulating yellow cards is an area the defender will need to manage carefully as he gains experience in a physically demanding league.
Focus turns to the next challenge
For Mbokazi, the immediate task will be to serve his suspension and prepare to return when eligible.
For Chicago Fire, the challenge is to maintain defensive stability without one of their regular centre-backs.
The club will be eager to secure a positive result against Orlando City as the race for favourable postseason positioning intensifies.
Although the one-match ban temporarily sidelines the Bafana Bafana star, his recent performances provide encouragement that he can return ready to contribute again.
