Tashreeq Matthews Reaches 80-Game Sundowns Milestone, But Suspension Threat Looms
Mamelodi Sundowns winger Tashreeq Matthews has reached an impressive milestone of 80 consecutive appearances for the Brazilians, underlining his remarkable consistency since April 2025. However, the run now faces a potential setback, with the attacker reportedly one booking away from an automatic domestic suspension.
Matthews extended his streak when he came off the bench during Sundowns’ 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in Tuesday’s Carling Knockout Last 16 encounter.
With just 15 minutes remaining, his introduction ensured that he maintained his record of featuring in every match for the Tshwane giants throughout the remarkable period.
The achievement highlights the winger’s importance to the team under head coach Miguel Cardoso, with his reliability making him a regular presence in Sundowns’ demanding schedule.
Matthews’ remarkable run began on 13 April 2025, when Sundowns faced Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-final.
Since then, the winger has remained available for selection across an extraordinary stretch of fixtures, accumulating more than 5,000 minutes of football.
His contribution has extended beyond simply being present on the pitch. During the run, Matthews has registered 14 goals and 13 assists, demonstrating his ability to influence matches in the final third.
Last season, he featured in 50 matches, starting 38 and making 12 appearances from the bench. This season, he has played in all 17 of Sundowns’ matches, maintaining his ever-present status.
That consistency has also helped raise his profile on the international stage, earning him a Bafana Bafana call-up during the most recent FIFA international window.
Despite the impressive numbers, Matthews faces a disciplinary concern that could bring his consecutive-appearance run to an end.
The winger has reportedly accumulated three yellow cards this season. Another domestic booking would trigger an automatic one-match suspension under the applicable competition rules, potentially forcing him to miss a fixture for the first time during this streak.
For Sundowns, losing Matthews for even one match would mean being without a player who has consistently contributed both goals and assists.
His ability to feature regularly has made him a dependable option for Cardoso, whether selected in the starting line-up or introduced from the bench.
Nevertheless, avoiding suspension is only part of the challenge. Matthews will need to maintain his aggressive attacking approach while being mindful of the disciplinary risk as Sundowns continue competing on multiple fronts.
Reaching 80 consecutive appearances is a significant achievement in a sport where demanding schedules, injuries and suspensions can interrupt even the most consistent players.
Matthews has managed to avoid those interruptions throughout his current run, but the possibility of suspension means his next domestic appearances will attract additional attention.
The focus will now be on whether the winger can extend the streak beyond 80 matches while continuing to deliver the performances that have made him an important member of the Sundowns squad.
