Mamelodi Sundowns could create a major scheduling challenge for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) if they reach the Carling Knockout Cup final, with their international commitments potentially forcing the league to reconsider the date of the domestic showpiece.
The concern centres on December 12, 2026, which is currently scheduled for the Carling Knockout final. Sundowns could also be involved in FIFA's Intercontinental Cup competition in Qatar on the same day, creating a possible clash between their domestic and international responsibilities.
The Brazilians have already secured their place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals after defeating Golden Arrows 1-0 in their quarter-final encounter. They are therefore just one victory away from reaching the final.
Their progress in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup has also contributed to the scheduling dilemma. Sundowns earned qualification for the Challenger Cup after winning the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, and their next assignment in the competition is scheduled for December 12.
If Miguel Cardoso's team reach the Carling Knockout final, the PSL could be left with the difficult task of finding another suitable date for the competition's deciding match.
The situation is particularly challenging because the South African football calendar is already under pressure from domestic league fixtures, continental competitions and international commitments.
Moving the final would require the PSL to consider the availability of both participating clubs, suitable venues and the schedules of other competitions.
However, a change is not yet guaranteed. Sundowns must first win their semi-final to qualify for the Carling Knockout final, while the PSL has not officially announced any decision to move the December 12 date.
For Sundowns, progressing in both competitions would represent an opportunity to compete for major honours. For the PSL, however, it could mean another difficult exercise in rearranging an already demanding football calendar.
