Bafana Bafana attacker Puso Dithejane continued to make his mark in Major League Soccer after scoring an important late goal to help Chicago Fire secure an impressive 4-2 comeback victory over Colorado Rapids on Sunday morning. The South African forward was among the goals as Chicago recovered from an early setback to collect all three points away from home.
The 22-year-old has been enjoying an encouraging campaign in the United States, and his latest contribution adds to his growing importance at Chicago Fire. Dithejane has now scored five goals and provided two assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season. His performance against Colorado was another positive moment for the young attacker, who continues to gain valuable experience outside South Africa.
Chicago did not have the best start to the match, as the home side took the lead in the 22nd minute through Morgan Whittaker. The visitors found themselves chasing the game, but they showed determination and eventually found a way back into the contest before half-time.
Chicago's response arrived in the 41st minute when Jonathan Bamba scored the equaliser. Bamba then completed his brace in the 56th minute, giving Gregg Berhalter's team a 2-1 advantage after the restart.
However, Colorado Rapids refused to give up and responded just two minutes later. Paxten Aaronson found the back of the net in the 58th minute to bring the score to 2-2, putting the visitors under pressure once again.
Despite conceding the equaliser, Chicago continued pushing forward in search of another goal. Their efforts paid off in the 74th minute when Robert Lewandowski scored to restore their advantage and make it 3-2.
Dithejane then made sure that Chicago would leave Colorado with maximum points. In the 88th minute, the South African attacker received a pass from Lewandowski inside the penalty area before finishing powerfully to make it 4-2. It was an important goal that confirmed the victory and gave the young Bafana Bafana attacker another opportunity to show his quality on the international stage.
The result also had important consequences for Chicago's season. The club secured its place in the Eastern Conference playoffs and moved to fourth position with 55 points.
For Dithejane, scoring in such an important match will be encouraging as he continues to build his career in American football. His five goals and two assists show that he has been contributing to the team's campaign, while his latest goal could provide further confidence heading into the remaining fixtures.
Chicago will now turn its attention to their next league assignment, where they are scheduled to face Columbus Crew at home on Saturday, 7 November. Dithejane will be hoping to continue his good form and add to his goal contribution as Chicago prepare for the playoffs.
The South African forward's progress in the United States will also be worth following for Bafana Bafana supporters, particularly as he continues to gain experience and compete at a higher level abroad.
