Milford FC Strengthen Fourth-Place Position With Important Victory Against Sekhukhune United
Milford FC continued their impressive start to life in the Betway Premiership after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The newly promoted side entered the encounter determined to consolidate their position among the league's leading teams, and they delivered another encouraging performance to strengthen their ambitions in the South African top flight.
Milford's victory was secured through Mvelo Zikayoko's first-half goal, which proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter between two sides looking to collect valuable league points.
Sekhukhune United started the match positively and looked dangerous during the opening stages. Chibuike Ohizu tested Milford goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza with a right-footed effort inside the penalty area, but the shot-stopper reacted well to keep his side in the contest.
Babina Noko continued searching for the breakthrough, with Tshepo Mokoane firing over the crossbar in the 19th minute after a promising attacking move.
However, Milford gradually found their rhythm and capitalised on their opportunity in the 24th minute. Menzi Chili played an important role in the build-up before picking out Zikayoko inside the area. The forward made no mistake, sending a powerful effort into the top-right corner to give the hosts a crucial advantage.
Sekhukhune attempted to respond before the interval, creating opportunities as they searched for an equaliser. However, Milford remained organised defensively and managed to protect their lead heading into half-time.
The second half saw Milford enjoy more possession, making it increasingly difficult for Sekhukhune to establish sustained attacking pressure. Both teams attempted efforts from distance, but neither managed to add another goal.
As the match progressed, the contest became increasingly tactical, with Milford focusing on maintaining their defensive discipline while Sekhukhune struggled to find a way through.
The result represented another significant achievement for Milford, who have been one of the encouraging stories of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.
Following the victory, Milford remained fourth on the league standings with 18 points from 10 matches, continuing to establish themselves as a competitive force against more established opponents.
The result also ended Sekhukhune United's two-match winning run in the league, dealing a setback to their efforts to climb the standings.
For Milford, the priority will now be maintaining their consistency as the season progresses. Their ability to turn closely contested matches into victories could prove crucial in determining how high they finish.
With confidence growing and valuable points accumulating, Milford will hope to continue surprising their rivals and strengthen their position among the Betway Premiership's leading teams.
