Da Cruz Makes Strong Claim After Kaizer Chiefs Lose Soweto Derby to Orlando Pirates

Da Cruz Reacts to Kaizer Chiefs' Soweto Derby Defeat as He Blames Missed Chances

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has voiced his frustration after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Orlando Pirates in Saturday's Soweto Derby, arguing that his players wasted several clear opportunities to win the match in the first half.

The much-anticipated derby was played in front of a packed FNB Stadium, with both teams eager to secure bragging rights and valuable points in the Betway Premiership. Although Chiefs showed attacking promise, they failed to make the most of their chances, eventually allowing their city rivals to claim victory.

Orlando Pirates took the lead in the 23rd minute through Yanela Mbuthuma. However, Kaizer Chiefs responded six minutes later as Pule Mmodi scored the equaliser to bring the contest back on level terms.

Speaking to SuperSport TV after the final whistle, Da Cruz expressed his belief that Chiefs should have taken greater advantage of their first-half dominance and gone into the break with a comfortable lead.

According to the French tactician, his team created enough opportunities to put the game beyond Pirates before half-time.

"In the first half, we must kill this game," Da Cruz stated.

He also suggested that Chiefs should have been leading by two or three goals at the interval. Additionally, he questioned the decision surrounding Pirates' opening goal, claiming that it appeared to be offside, while also suggesting that a possible red-card decision was overlooked.

"Normally, 2 or 3-0 because the goal of Pirates, we've seen it's offside and maybe there is a red card as well," he added.

"If we score two or three goals, we're gonna kill this game."

Despite Chiefs' promising first-half display, they struggled to maintain their momentum after the restart. Orlando Pirates regained the advantage in the 55th minute when Tshepang Moremi found the net, putting the Buccaneers ahead for the second time.

Pirates subsequently defended their lead effectively, preventing Chiefs from finding another equaliser and securing an important 2-1 derby victory.

The result will undoubtedly disappoint Da Cruz, especially considering his belief that his players created enough scoring opportunities to win the encounter. Chiefs will now need to improve their finishing and become more clinical in front of goal as they continue their Betway Premiership campaign.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have plenty to celebrate following their derby triumph, with the victory also lifting the Buccaneers to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
