Sundowns to Hold Further PSL Talks Over Outstanding Fixtures
Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to continue engaging with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) over their outstanding fixtures for the remainder of the year, despite suffering a major setback in their CAF Champions League campaign.
The Tshwane giants were eliminated from Africa's premier club competition after failing to overcome Angolan side Wiliete SC in the second preliminary round. The result ended Sundowns' hopes of reaching the group stages and marked a disappointing moment for a club accustomed to competing among the continent's elite.
Sundowns entered the campaign with high expectations following their previous continental success. However, their journey came to an unexpected end after a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld, with Wiliete progressing on the away-goals rule following a goalless first leg in Angola.
Although the elimination has changed the club's continental schedule, Sundowns still have several domestic commitments to manage before the end of 2026. Their demanding calendar has made fixture planning an important issue, particularly as they continue competing in multiple competitions.
The club's participation in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup has also contributed to the scheduling challenge. With international commitments affecting the availability of match dates, further discussions with the PSL could prove necessary to ensure that outstanding league fixtures are accommodated appropriately.
Sundowns' international commitments have already raised questions about potential changes to their domestic schedule, with possible clashes involving important Betway Premiership fixtures and the Carling Knockout calendar.
The absence of Champions League group-stage matches gives Sundowns additional room to focus on their domestic campaign. However, their remaining commitments mean that the fixture situation still requires careful attention from the club and the league.
Their immediate priority is the Carling Knockout, alongside their Betway Premiership responsibilities. These matches will be important as Sundowns attempt to maintain momentum following their continental disappointment.
The club also have league fixtures to navigate in November and December. The final arrangement of the schedule will depend on the PSL's planning and any further adjustments required to accommodate the team's commitments in other competitions.
For head coach Miguel Cardoso, managing the squad's workload will remain a priority. Sundowns have built their reputation on competing for major honours, and the coach will want his players to respond positively to their Champions League exit.
Although their continental campaign has ended earlier than expected, the Brazilians still have domestic silverware to pursue. Their ability to recover quickly, maintain consistency and manage the pressure of the remaining fixtures could shape how their season unfolds.
For now, attention remains on the upcoming matches and the discussions surrounding the outstanding schedule. Sundowns will hope to reach a workable arrangement with the PSL, allowing them to concentrate on their remaining objectives before the end of the year.
