Miguel Cardoso Explains Saleng’s Return as Sundowns Secure Carling Knockout Victory

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on Monnapule Saleng’s reintegration into the team after the winger made his first appearance of the season in a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout.

Saleng’s return is an important development for the Brazilians as they continue competing for domestic honours. The former Orlando Pirates attacker is a talented player whose pace, creativity and ability to take on defenders could provide Sundowns with another attacking option as the season progresses.

His appearance against Marumo Gallants marked a significant step after a period away from the matchday action. However, his return also raises questions about how quickly he can regain his rhythm and establish himself within Cardoso’s plans.

For Sundowns, the priority will be ensuring that the winger settles back into the squad and gradually builds the match fitness required to contribute consistently.

Cardoso’s explanation of Saleng’s reintegration provides an important insight into the club’s approach to managing the player’s return. Bringing an individual back into the first-team setup involves more than simply including him in the matchday squad. It also requires careful management, an understanding of the team's tactical demands and a gradual process of rebuilding confidence and consistency.

The Portuguese coach has been working to maintain Sundowns' competitive standards while ensuring that his available players understand their responsibilities within the team's system.

Saleng's qualities could prove valuable in that process, particularly when Sundowns face opponents who defend deep and make it difficult to create clear scoring opportunities. His direct running and attacking instincts could give the team additional ways to break down stubborn defences.

The 1-0 result against Marumo Gallants was also significant because it allowed Sundowns to progress in the Carling Knockout competition. In cup football, securing the result is often more important than producing a spectacular performance, and the Tshwane giants will be encouraged by their ability to advance.

Nevertheless, Saleng's individual progress will remain a major talking point among supporters who are eager to see what he can offer in the famous yellow jersey.

While his first appearance is an encouraging sign, it remains to be seen how many minutes he will receive in upcoming fixtures. His involvement will likely depend on his fitness, performances in training and Cardoso's tactical requirements.

For now, Sundowns supporters have reason to welcome Saleng's return, with the winger potentially offering another dimension to the club's attacking options as the campaign continues.
