Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Betway Premiership table after recording an impressive 4-1 victory over Durban City on Saturday night.

The Brazilians went into the match knowing that a win would take them above Orlando Pirates, who had temporarily moved to the summit following their 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby earlier in the day.

Sundowns responded strongly, delivering an entertaining performance to secure all three points and reclaim first place in the league standings.

Thabang Matuludi was among the standout performers, scoring twice to help the defending champions secure a comfortable victory. Iqraam Rayners and Antonio Van Wyk also found the back of the net as Sundowns demonstrated their attacking strength.

Durban City managed to get on the scoresheet through Jean Lwamba, but his goal was not enough to prevent the visitors from suffering a heavy defeat.

Matuludi's contribution was particularly important, as the defender continues to make his presence felt while competing for a regular place in the Sundowns starting line-up. His two goals helped him earn the Man of the Match award, further highlighting his impressive performance.

The result also provided an important response from Sundowns after Pirates had briefly taken control of the league table.

Pirates' derby victory over Chiefs had put the Buccaneers at the top, increasing the pressure on Sundowns to deliver a positive result against Durban City. However, the Brazilians handled the challenge well and ensured that their rivals' stay at the summit was short-lived.

The 4-1 victory means Sundowns have reclaimed top spot in the Betway Premiership, while Orlando Pirates have dropped back to second place.

With the league campaign continuing, the battle between the two giants is becoming increasingly interesting. Both clubs will be determined to maintain consistency as they compete for the championship.

Sundowns will now look to build on this convincing performance, while Pirates will be eager to respond in their next league fixture.
