Chippa United coach Brandon Truter has criticised the media for creating a narrative that he should be dismissed, insisting that the club is trying to change its reputation for regularly firing coaches when results do not go their way.
Truter made these comments after Chippa suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout Cup last weekend. The loss brought their campaign in the competition to an end and placed more attention on the coach's position at the club.
The Chilli Boys have not enjoyed the best start to the season, recording just two victories in nine matches across all competitions. They have also registered five draws and three defeats, which has increased the pressure on the team to improve its results.
Despite these numbers, Truter believes there has been progress compared to last season. He feels the media has been focusing too much on calls for him to be fired instead of considering how the team has performed compared to the previous campaign.
"There's been a lot said in the media about me still being around. I don't really read it a lot. But when I open something, I see they say I should have been fired or whatever," Truter said.
He questioned why his team was receiving so much criticism, pointing out that Chippa had only won one match by December last season.
The coach also raised concerns about the treatment of South African coaches and believes the growing pressure to dismiss coaches could be affecting the development of football in the country.
Truter mentioned several well-known coaches, including Steve Barker, Manqoba Mngqithi, Pitso Mosimane, Rulani Mokwena and Eric Tinkler, while discussing the situation.
He believes younger coaches need time to gain experience and guidance from those who have worked at the highest level. Although he understands that winning matches is important and that coaches must accept pressure, he feels there should be more consideration when discussing their futures.
Truter also revealed that Chippa's chairman wants to change the club's reputation for frequently dismissing coaches. According to him, the chairman understands the importance of following a process when building a team.
The coach admitted that scoring goals remains one of Chippa's biggest problems, even though he believes the team has shown improvement in certain performances.
Chippa have since responded positively to their cup disappointment by beating Stellenbosch FC 2-0 on Saturday. The victory moved them into seventh place in the league standings and provided a welcome boost for Truter and his players.
