Pitso Mosimane Names 38 Players for Bafana Bafana Ahead of AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Against Kenya

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has reportedly selected 38 players for consideration ahead of South Africa’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 qualifying matches against Kenya in November, as he continues preparing the national team for the crucial fixtures.

The preliminary selection features a mixture of experienced internationals, promising young talents and South African players competing abroad. However, the 38-man list is not the final squad, meaning several players will still need to convince Mosimane before the team is officially confirmed for the qualifiers.

Among the familiar names included are captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Orlando Pirates forward Oswin Appollis, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane and striker Iqraam Rayners. Other notable selections include Lyle Foster, Relebohile Mofokeng, Teboho Mokoena, Thapelo Morena, Cassius Mailula and Luther Singh.

The provisional squad also highlights Mosimane’s willingness to consider players from different clubs and international leagues. Sphephelo Sithole, who plays for Portugal’s Tondela, Ime Okon of Germany’s Hannover 96, Luke Le Roux of Belgium’s Cercle Brugge and Mbekezeli Mbokazi of Chicago Fire in the United States are among those listed.

Brooklyn Poggenpoel of Durban City, Lebone Seema of Orlando Pirates and Puso Dithejane of Chicago Fire have also attracted attention as the coach assesses his available options.

Mosimane’s return to the Bafana Bafana coaching position was announced in September 2026, placing him in charge ahead of an important period for South African football. His previous achievements include winning the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

The November qualifiers will be significant for South Africa’s hopes of reaching AFCON 2027, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

With competition for places expected to be intense, attention will now focus on Mosimane’s final selection and the players he believes can deliver positive results against Kenya.
