Sports broadcaster Robert Marawa has drawn attention to a scheduling clash in South African football after Kaizer Chiefs’ Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against Siwelele FC was scheduled for the same time as the Super Cup Final.
According to the Carling Knockout Cup fixtures shared in the discussion, Chiefs are set to face Siwelele FC on Sunday, November 8, at 15:00. The timing has raised questions because the Super Cup Final is also scheduled to take place during the same period, potentially forcing football supporters to choose which match to follow.
Marawa highlighted the overlap by referring to the official Carling Knockout Cup fixture schedule, bringing attention to the challenges created when major football events are played simultaneously.
The Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final programme also includes Orlando Pirates against Sekhukhune United on Saturday, while Stellenbosch FC are scheduled to meet AmaZulu on Sunday evening.
However, the Chiefs fixture has attracted particular attention because of its direct clash with the Super Cup Final, an event expected to draw interest from supporters of the participating teams and the wider football audience.
The scheduling issue has also generated reactions among football fans, with opinions divided over the complaints surrounding the fixture arrangement. Some supporters have dismissed the concerns, while others have questioned why the Premier Soccer League would allow two high-profile matches to overlap.
Questions have also been raised about the impact on broadcasters, who may face difficulties serving viewers interested in watching both events. Supporters who follow multiple clubs could similarly find themselves unable to watch the matches live.
The discussion has once again brought fixture scheduling and congestion into focus in South African football. With several competitions taking place during the season, coordinating match dates and kick-off times remains important for clubs, broadcasters and supporters.
Marawa’s observation has therefore opened a wider conversation about whether the current fixture arrangement gives enough consideration to fans who want to enjoy the country's biggest football events without having to choose between simultaneous kick-offs.
