Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Efmamjjasond González is making headlines in China after rediscovering his goal-scoring form with Nantong Zhiyun, delivering impressive performances during the 2026 China League One season.
The Colombian forward has emerged as one of Nantong Zhiyun’s most important attacking players, scoring 10 goals to become the club’s leading scorer. His performances have attracted attention, particularly among South African football supporters who remember his disappointing spell at Kaizer Chiefs.
González joined Amakhosi on loan for the 2023/24 season, arriving at Naturena with expectations that he would strengthen the club’s attacking options. However, the striker struggled to make an impact, making seven appearances without finding the back of the net.
His loan spell ended without the breakthrough many had hoped for, and he returned to Bolivian club Real Santa Cruz in June 2024.
Since leaving Kaizer Chiefs, however, González’s career has taken a different direction. He reportedly joined Bolivian side Always Ready, where he rediscovered his scoring touch by netting 11 goals in 13 appearances. Those performances helped restore his confidence and provided an opportunity to continue his career abroad.
The 27-year-old subsequently returned to Chinese football, where he became part of Nantong Zhiyun’s attacking setup. His current form suggests that the striker has found an environment in which he can showcase his abilities more consistently.
One of his most important contributions came in Nantong Zhiyun’s 1-0 victory over Ningbo FC, when González scored the decisive goal. The result lifted his team into second place with five matches remaining in the season.
According to reports, finishing second could secure promotion to the Chinese Super League, making González’s goals particularly valuable during the closing stages of the campaign.
His emergence as Nantong Zhiyun’s top scorer, ahead of teammates such as Aldo Kalulu, underlines his importance to the club’s promotion ambitions.
For Kaizer Chiefs supporters, González’s resurgence is a reminder that players can experience contrasting fortunes after changing clubs. Although his time at Naturena produced little success, his performances in China have given him an opportunity to rebuild his reputation.
