Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has revealed what head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou expects from his players as the Buccaneers prepare for their highly anticipated Soweto Derby clash against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Pirates head into the Betway Premiership encounter following an impressive 3-0 victory over Milford FC in their Carling Knockout Cup match on Tuesday. However, despite the comfortable win, Ouaddou was reportedly unhappy with certain aspects of his team's performance, particularly their failure to convert several scoring opportunities and some of their decision-making in the final third.
Speaking ahead of the derby, Sibisi explained that the Moroccan coach has high expectations of his squad and does not allow players to become complacent simply because they have secured convincing victories.
The Pirates captain pointed out that players who have spent more time working under Ouaddou have gradually become familiar with his coaching philosophy and demands. Meanwhile, those who recently joined the club are also learning to understand what he expects from them.
“For some of us who have been with him for the past season, it’s been easier for us to understand what he wants and what he demands,” Sibisi explained.
The defender further emphasised that Ouaddou is not satisfied with ordinary performances, as his primary objective is to ensure that every player strives for the highest possible standards.
“I think everyone who just came in also learned and understands him because he doesn’t demand good, he wants excellence,” Sibisi said.
According to Sibisi, the Pirates coach is a straightforward individual who does not hesitate to point out mistakes and areas requiring improvement, regardless of how convincingly his team wins.
“Whenever we win 3-0 or 4-0 or 8-0, he will say straight. He is a straight talker, so for us it is to take it in a positive manner and push.”
With the Buccaneers preparing for one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar, Sibisi's comments highlight the standards Ouaddou wants to maintain within his squad.
Pirates will need to demonstrate discipline, concentration and consistency as they prepare to face their Soweto rivals in a derby where both teams will be desperate to secure bragging rights and maximum points.
