Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has shed light on head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s strong views on showboating, revealing that the Moroccan tactician wants his players to prioritise effectiveness and scoring goals rather than focusing too much on individual displays of skill.
Showboating has traditionally been part of football, with talented players using their technical abilities, tricks and creativity to entertain supporters and unsettle opponents. However, Ouaddou believes that individual flair must serve a greater purpose and should never come at the expense of the team's objectives.
According to Sibisi, the Pirates coach expects his players to understand when to express themselves and when to make decisions that will benefit the team. Although the Buccaneers have several technically gifted footballers capable of beating opponents in one-on-one situations, their skills must translate into meaningful attacking opportunities.
Ouaddou's philosophy is centred on making the most of possession, creating scoring chances and ensuring that attacking movements produce positive results. Players are therefore encouraged to recognise the right moments to take on defenders, deliver passes or attempt to find the back of the net.
The coach's position does not necessarily mean that he wants to eliminate entertaining football from the Pirates' playing style. Instead, he wants creativity to be accompanied by discipline, intelligent decision-making and a clear understanding of individual responsibilities.
For a club with Pirates' history and ambitions, competing for domestic honours and making progress in continental competitions remain important priorities. Supporters appreciate exciting performances, but consistent results are ultimately what determine the team's success.
Sibisi's comments suggest that the Pirates dressing room is becoming familiar with Ouaddou's expectations as the players continue adapting to his methods.
The challenge for the Buccaneers will be maintaining their attacking identity while ensuring that individual brilliance contributes directly to collective success.
