Milford FC continued their impressive rise in the Betway Premiership after recording a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The result strengthened Milford's position in the league standings, moving them four points ahead of Kaizer Chiefs and underlining their growing ambitions in the South African top flight.
Mvelo Zikayoko proved to be the difference between the two sides, scoring the decisive goal in the 24th minute to hand Milford their second consecutive league victory.
The breakthrough came after Milford produced a positive spell of attacking play. Menzi Chili picked out Zikayoko inside the penalty area, and the forward made no mistake, firing a powerful right-footed effort into the top-right corner.
It was a clinical finish that rewarded Milford's attacking initiative and left Sekhukhune goalkeeper unable to prevent the hosts from taking the lead.
Sekhukhune had started the encounter with attacking intent and created opportunities to take control of the contest. Chibuike Ohizu tested goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza in the opening minutes, but the Milford shot-stopper was equal to the challenge.
Babina Noko continued searching for an equaliser, with Tshepo Mokoane and other attacking players attempting to break through the home side's defensive organisation.
However, despite enjoying several promising moments, Sekhukhune struggled to turn their opportunities into goals. Their inability to find a clinical finish ultimately proved costly.
Milford also had chances to extend their advantage before the interval, but neither side managed to add to the scoreline as the teams headed into the dressing rooms with the hosts leading 1-0.
The second half saw Sekhukhune attempt to increase the pressure, but Milford showed impressive discipline and composure. The hosts worked hard to restrict their opponents' space and prevented them from building sustained attacking momentum.
As the match progressed, the visitors found it increasingly difficult to create clear opportunities, while Milford remained organised enough to protect their narrow advantage.
The final whistle confirmed another important result for a Milford side that continues to exceed expectations in the Premiership.
The victory took Milford to 18 points from 10 matches, placing them fourth on the standings and four points ahead of fifth-placed Kaizer Chiefs, who have collected 14 points from nine matches.
For Sekhukhune, the defeat ended a two-match winning streak in the league and represented a missed opportunity to strengthen their position among the leading sides.
Milford will now look to maintain their consistency as the campaign develops. Their latest performance demonstrated that they possess the defensive discipline and attacking quality required to compete against established Premiership opponents.
