Puso Dithejane Delivers Late Blow as Chicago Fire Fight Back to Beat Colorado Rapids
Bafana Bafana attacker Puso Dithejane continued to make his mark in the United States after scoring a late goal to help Chicago Fire secure an impressive 4-2 victory over Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday night.
The South African forward found the back of the net in the 88th minute, putting the finishing touches on a memorable comeback victory for Chicago at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park. His goal capped an entertaining encounter in which the visitors recovered from an early setback before producing an impressive attacking performance.
The result was particularly important for Chicago as they continued their push to secure a strong position in the Eastern Conference standings ahead of the MLS regular-season finale.
Colorado made a promising start and took the lead in the 22nd minute through Morgan Whittaker, who capitalised on the home side's attacking momentum to put the hosts ahead.
Chicago, however, refused to panic and gradually worked their way back into the contest. Their persistence paid off shortly before half-time when Jonathan Bamba equalised in the 41st minute, giving the visitors renewed confidence heading into the break.
Bamba continued his excellent performance after the restart, scoring again in the 56th minute to give Chicago a 2-1 advantage. The winger's second goal put the visitors in control, although Colorado responded almost immediately.
Paxten Aaronson restored parity for the Rapids in the 58th minute, setting up a tense final half-hour as both teams searched for another breakthrough.
Chicago eventually found the decisive moment through Robert Lewandowski, who scored in the 74th minute to restore the visitors' lead. The experienced forward made his opportunity count, putting his side ahead 3-2 and moving them closer to an important away victory.
Dithejane then delivered the decisive finishing touch late in the match.
Introduced from the bench in the 87th minute, the South African attacker needed only seconds to make his presence felt. Lewandowski provided the assist, allowing Dithejane to slot home Chicago's fourth goal in the 88th minute and end any remaining hopes of a Colorado comeback.
The goal represented another encouraging moment for Dithejane, whose performances in the United States will attract interest from South African football supporters following his involvement with Bafana Bafana.
For Chicago, the victory extended their unbeaten run to three matches and kept them fourth in the Eastern Conference with 55 points from 33 matches. The team also reached 61 goals for the season, recording at least 60 goals in consecutive campaigns for the first time in the club's history.
Chicago will now turn their attention to their final regular-season fixture against Columbus Crew on November 7, hoping to maintain their momentum heading into the playoffs.
For Dithejane, scoring in such an important victory provides another opportunity to strengthen his reputation abroad and remind South African supporters of his growing contribution to the game.
