Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou expressed dissatisfaction with his players, despite a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup at home on Tuesday.
The defending champions secured all three goals in the first half, advancing to the quarter-finals. However, Ouaddou stated that the only positives he could draw from the match were the scoreline and the clean sheet.
In an interview with SuperSport TV, the Moroccan coach voiced his disappointment about the team's performance, feeling they lacked control and were hasty in their decision-making. He also criticized some players for being selfish, choosing to shoot instead of passing to teammates in better positions to score.
Ouaddou emphasized the need for improvement if the team aims to meet their season's objectives, such as winning the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League. He warned that if Pirates continue to play this way, they will not achieve success and encouraged his players to evaluate their performances honestly, stating that many need to step up.
The coach was particularly frustrated that Milford had more possession at times during the match on Pirates' home ground. He indicated he would review the statistics but believed a visiting team should not dominate possession at Orlando Stadium. While he acknowledged that the team had played only three days prior and might have been fatigued, he pointed out that he had made squad rotations.
Ouaddou affirmed that Pirates is a prestigious club and players must perform at a high level. He noted he is not there to coddle anyone and insisted the team must be prepared from the start, especially as the defending champions.
Pirates are now awaiting the announcement of their next opponents in the competition.
