Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has shed light on the tactical approach that helped his side hold CAF Champions League holders Mamelodi Sundowns to a goalless draw in Angola.
The Angolan outfit produced a disciplined performance in the first leg of their second qualifying-round tie, denying Sundowns the advantage they would have hoped to take into the return fixture.
Bianchi’s side focused on limiting Sundowns’ attacking influence while remaining organised without the ball. The strategy required patience, concentration and a collective defensive effort as the Angolans worked to frustrate one of Africa’s leading clubs.
Rather than allowing Sundowns to dictate the contest comfortably, Wiliete stayed compact and made it difficult for the South Africans to find clear openings in the final third.
The result gives Wiliete something to build on ahead of the decisive second leg, while Sundowns will know they must be more clinical if they are to avoid an early setback in their continental campaign.
For Bianchi, the stalemate was evidence that his tactical plan had worked against a team boasting significant Champions League pedigree.
The second leg will now provide Sundowns with an opportunity to respond on home soil, but Wiliete have shown they are capable of making life difficult for the defending champions.
With qualification at stake, both sides will have little room for error when the tie reaches its conclusion.
