Usuthu cement third spot with derby victory over Golden Arrows
AmaZulu FC continued their impressive run of form in the Betway Premiership after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday evening.
The crucial derby triumph further strengthened Usuthu's position in third place on the league standings, underlining their growing consistency and determination to remain among South Africa's leading teams this season.
Both sides approached the encounter with plenty at stake, but it was AmaZulu who demonstrated greater attacking ambition during the opening stages. The hosts looked determined to establish control early, creating promising opportunities and putting the Golden Arrows defence under considerable pressure.
One of AmaZulu's earliest opportunities arrived in the fifth minute when Athini Maqokola narrowly missed connecting with a close-range header following a set-piece situation.
Philani Kumalo and Mondli Mbanjwa also threatened the visitors' defensive organisation with efforts that tested Golden Arrows' ability to contain the hosts.
However, Golden Arrows remained competitive and gradually found opportunities to threaten the AmaZulu defence. Sabelo Sithole and Sede Dion were among the players who attempted to create openings, although neither side managed to break the deadlock before the interval.
The visitors returned from the half-time break with renewed determination, immediately looking to change the direction of the contest.
Sabelo Sithole came close to giving Golden Arrows the advantage, forcing AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela into action with a dangerous left-footed attempt following an attacking move involving Siphesihle Msomi.
Despite the pressure, AmaZulu maintained their composure and eventually found the breakthrough in the 65th minute.
The decisive moment arrived when Nkosikhona Radebe delivered an inviting pass into the penalty area, allowing Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya to finish confidently with his left foot and put the home side ahead.
The goal proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter.
Golden Arrows subsequently increased their attacking efforts in search of an equaliser, pushing forward and attempting to exploit opportunities in the final third. However, AmaZulu's defensive organisation and determination prevented the visitors from finding a way back into the match.
Usuthu managed the closing stages professionally, protecting their advantage until the final whistle and securing another valuable three points.
The victory also represented AmaZulu's fifth consecutive league win, highlighting the positive momentum currently surrounding the club under their ongoing Premiership campaign.
For Golden Arrows, the defeat represented another difficult result after suffering consecutive league losses.
