Zwane Identifies Six Players to Watch in the Soweto Derby

Zwane Names Six Players Who Could Decide the Soweto Derby Between Pirates and Chiefs

Orlando Pirates legend Eugene Zwane has identified six players who could have a decisive influence on Saturday's highly anticipated Soweto Derby between the Buccaneers and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

With South African football preparing for another chapter in one of the continent's biggest rivalries, attention is already turning towards the individuals who could make the difference when the two Soweto giants meet in the Betway Premiership.

The encounter, scheduled for Saturday, 31 October, comes at an important stage of the 2026/27 campaign, with both clubs desperate to secure bragging rights and valuable league points.

Pirates head into the fixture carrying considerable momentum under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The reigning champions have enjoyed an impressive start to their league campaign, collecting 22 points from eight matches and establishing themselves among the leading title contenders.

Chiefs, meanwhile, will be hoping to use the derby as an opportunity to make a statement under Fernando da Cruz, particularly after experiencing an inconsistent run of results in the league.

Speaking about the players who could influence the outcome, Zwane highlighted the attacking quality available to Pirates, particularly Tshepang Moremi, Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis.

The former Buccaneers favourite believes the trio possess the individual quality and attacking influence to trouble the Chiefs defence. Their ability to create opportunities, stretch defensive lines and deliver important contributions could prove crucial in such a demanding encounter.

Mofokeng and Appollis, in particular, have developed into important attacking figures for Pirates, while Moremi's pace and direct approach offer another dimension to their forward line.

However, Zwane believes Chiefs also have individuals capable of changing the contest.

Mduduzi Shabalala is one player he believes could use the occasion to demonstrate his quality. The talented midfielder has the ability to influence attacking situations, and the Soweto Derby presents an ideal platform for him to make a statement.

Zwane also pointed towards Lebohang Maboe, whose experience and ability to contribute from midfield could provide Chiefs with additional stability and creativity.

Wandile Duba is another name identified by the Pirates legend, with his attacking movement and ability to find scoring opportunities potentially giving Amakhosi an important weapon.

Interestingly, Chiefs arrive after a convincing 3-0 Carling Knockout victory over TS Galaxy, while Pirates also secured a 3-0 win against Milford FC.

With both teams enjoying confidence from their midweek performances, Saturday's encounter promises an intriguing battle.

Ultimately, Zwane's selections underline the importance of individual brilliance in a fixture where tactical discipline, composure and clinical finishing could determine which Soweto giant walks away victorious.
