A red card in the Soweto Derby has left Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel in a very uncomfortable position at the club.
The Angolan centre-back was sent off after picking up two yellow cards during Sunday’s big clash against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. Chiefs lost the match, and Miguel’s dismissal only made a difficult afternoon worse for the Amakhosi.
This is not the first time the player has found himself in trouble with the referee. Since joining Kaizer Chiefs from Petro de Luanda in July 2024, Miguel has collected several bookings. He has already served two suspensions earlier in his time at the club – one for reaching four yellow cards and another after a previous red card. Last season alone he picked up ten cautions and served two domestic bans.
The latest sending-off means Miguel will miss the next two fixtures. When he returns, he will already be carrying three yellow cards, putting him at risk of another suspension if he is not careful. At the same time, competition for places is growing. Rushwin Dortley is back in the squad and looking to reclaim a starting role in central defence.
Club sources say Miguel’s repeated disciplinary problems have not gone unnoticed. His three-year contract runs until June 2027, and talks about an extension have been raised by his representatives. However, the constant bookings are making life difficult. Chiefs fans and officials have grown used to disciplined defenders in the past, and Miguel’s record is starting to stand out for the wrong reasons.
The Soweto Derby is always a high-pressure game, and emotions run high. Still, two yellow cards in such an important match have left many supporters questioning whether the player can keep his place in the starting eleven.
Miguel remains an important part of the squad when he is available. He has shown solid defensive qualities and physical strength. But at a big club like Kaizer Chiefs, consistency and discipline matter just as much as talent. The coming weeks will show whether the defender can turn things around or whether the latest red card will have longer-lasting effects on his future at Naturena.
For now, the Amakhosi will have to manage without him for the next two games while the player reflects on yet another costly sending-off.
